Lighthouse Homeless Shelter helps families get back on their feet (Audio included)

107 S. Madriver St.The Lighthouse Homeless Shelter assists people facing crisis in Logan County by providing shelter, food, clothing, and beds.

The organization does not just provide housing support. It also requires its clients to go through a housing readiness program. The program allows the homeless individuals to sit down with a mentor and work on a personal budget. The program also requires the client to get a job. Once the person learns how to budget and has built a small surplus the shelter will help them with finding permanent housing.

The shelter believes that everyone has worth whether it is wealth, material, skill, emotional, or spiritual. The group requires its clients to give back to the community by helping at Our Daily Bread, helping around the shelter, or coming back after they have completed the readiness program and mentoring new clients.

The shelter is always looking for volunteers to help. It can be busy work but when you see a family get back on their feet it is very encouraging.

The organization can be reached at 935-4292 to volunteer or to refer a family for services.

The shelter has two homes:

107 South Madriver Street - single women and families

225 North Detroit Street - single men

Executive Director Deb Storm and volunteer Casey Storm discuss the shelter.

The Lighthouse Homeless Shelter is the December recipient of the Community Spotlight Grant, sponsored by Liberty National Bank and Logan Dental Care.
