Northern Miami Valley Ohio Red Cross to Hold Numerous Blood Drives Throughout June

GREENVILLE (May 26, 2017)— Blood donations tend to dwindle over the summer months with the high frequency of travel and time spent doing other enjoyable outdoor activities. The Northern Miami Valley Ohio Chapter of the American Red Cross is hoping to combat this issue by making blood drives more easily accessible during the summer. That way, it’s a win-win for everyone: more adventures and more lives saved.

In the month of June alone, the chapter is hosting seven blood drives in Clark, Champaign and Logan counties.

With the number of new donors typically declining by more than 30 percent during the summer months of June, July and August, the chapter is extending its call for donors to those who have never donated blood before.

“Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion,” said Lynne Gump, Executive Director of the Northern Miami Valley Ohio Chapter of the American Red Cross. “Summer is a difficult time to collect donations with schools that host blood drives on break and many people off enjoying vacation, yet that critical and constant need for blood does not change. As we kickoff the unofficial start to summer this Memorial Day weekend, we welcome our valued volunteer donors and those who never donated before to give the gift of life. Patients are counting on us.”

For those who want to make a difference in the lives of others this summer, below is information about each blood drive the Northern Miami Valley Ohio Chapter is hosting in June.

Donating blood is a simple process and only takes a short time. To help reduce the fear of the unknown for new donors, here are six things helpful to know before donating blood:

  • Maintain a healthy iron level in your diet
  • Hydrate – drink an extra 16 ounces of liquid before and after your donation
  • Have a healthy meal before your donation – avoid foods high in fat just prior to donation
  • Wear comfortable clothing with sleeves that can be raised above the elbow
  • Complete your RapidPass on the day of donation, prior to arriving, to save time
  • Remember to bring your ID
